The Swedish government has given the Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA) the power to set detailed requirements for gambling licensees’ action plans for curbing excessive gambling, in a move set to take effect on October 1.
Swedish licensees must set out their duty of care for players.
“There must be order in the gambling market”, said Niklas Wykman, the Minister of Financial Markets in a statement on August 29. “The new requirement should lead to more detailed action plans so that it becomes clear how the gambling companies take their responsibility to counteract risks related to gambling”.
“This strengthens the Swedish Gambling Authority's ability to prevent people from being affected by the negative aspects of gambling”, he said.
The authority has noticed that licensees plans for protecting players vary widely, the government said.
In an unrelated matter, the SGA has issued a warning and penalty fee to IF Björklöven, a second-tier ice hockey team, for violations in non-profit lottery fundraising.
The club was fined 20,000 Swedish krona (€1,760) for violations including changing the date of a draw date that was announced because not enough tickets were sold.
The club also was found negligent in technical breaches, including supplying important information to lottery customers, the authority said in a statement.
