2026 is shaping up to be a watershed year for payments compliance - and AI compliance in particular. As rapid technological innovation collides with shifting regulation and new financial models, the rules of the game are being rewritten in real time. Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to become the engine behind smarter risk detection, faster decision-making, and more effective regulatory oversight. Predictive analytics, automation, and real-time monitoring will increasingly separate leading compliance teams from the rest. But with this acceleration comes complexity: integrating AI responsibly, ethically, and transparently will pose operational challenges that ultimately define which firms turn compliance into a true competitive advantage.

In this blog, Emőke Péter, Global Head of Public & Regulatory Affairs at Worldline, casts her predictions on the topic as part of Vixio’s Compliance Crystal Ball 202. Discover why she believes the key to effective, responsible AI integration will be preparation through building appropriate governance frameworks and AI literacy across teams.

2026: Europe’s Moment to Deliver - Transforming Vision into Home‑Grown Innovation

By Emőke Péter, Global Head of Public & Regulatory Affairs, Worldline

Europe is entering a defining chapter. As we look toward 2026, the signals are clear: bold political commitments and foundational regulatory milestones are converging to shape a digital future that embodies European values and secures its competitiveness. Compliance with AI is no longer merely a cost, it is now recognized as a strategic lever for trusted, home-grown innovation.

A unified political front for digital sovereignty

Mid-November's Franco-German Summit on Digital Sovereignty, featuring President Macron and Chancellor Merz, sent an unmistakable message across the continent: Europe will no longer be a passive consumer of foreign technology. The pledge is profound: to strategically reduce dependency on non-European providers and cultivate robust, competitive, home-grown alternatives. The expanded partnership between European giants like SAP and the cutting-edge innovators at Mistral AI is a practical embodiment of this vision, demonstrating that securing digital sovereignty and enhancing industrial competitiveness are mutually reinforcing goals.

Europe is declaring its digital independence, and 2026 will be the year to walk the talk, and translate this commitment into strategies and commercial deployment.

From AI regulation to strategic governance

The European Commission has provided the blueprint with its Digital Package mid-November. At its heart lies the Digital Omnibus, designed to simplify compliance across AI, cybersecurity, and data governance, thus accelerating innovation.

The Omnibus delays the implementation timeline of the AI Act. The original timeline for the full applicability of the EU AI Act was set for August 2026. While the complexity of governing high-risk AI—systems used in critical areas like finance, healthcare, and law enforcement—has led to a strategic enforcement deferral to December 2027, the underlying principle is: AI must be deployed responsibly, transparently, and with human oversight. This delay is a pragmatic choice, given that technical standards still needs to be finalized. Crucially, the Omnibus changes not just the “when” but the “how”, introducing a flexibility clause, allowing providers to self-assess and potentially exempt their systems if they consider it genuinely pose no risk. This move is meant to show shift toward simplification and proportionate regulation, encouraging innovation while preserving the Act’s rigorous safety principles, it sparks at the same time a healthy debate about accountability. The decision is far from final, these proposals will now move to the European Parliament and the Council for adoption.

2026: The year of standards and strategic preparations

For businesses, 2026 will be defined by proactive preparation. While enforcement timelines may have shifted, the strategic imperative has not. Companies must inventory their AI systems, build robust governance frameworks, and, most importantly, invest in AI literacy across their teams, starting with legal, compliance, and engineering teams.

The Commission is actively supporting this journey, launching the Compliance Checker tool and the AI Act Service Desk to provide clarity and assistance—signaling a partnership between the regulator and the innovator.

This preparatory push is bolstered by financial muscle. The Apply AI Strategy, backed by a massive €1 billion investment, is set to accelerate adoption with an “AI First” and “Buy European” mantra, placing open-source at its core and dedicating targeted support to SMEs.

Europe’s moment to lead in AI

Europe's stake in this game is immense. With only 13.5% of EU businesses currently using AI, there is a vast opportunity to move beyond generative AI and office automation to achieve true transformation and sustainable economic growth.

As President von der Leyen declared, "The future of AI is to be made in Europe." This is more than a technological statement; it is a geopolitical pivot. And now, we need to walk the talk and align action with the vision. 2026 will be dedicated to progress towards actively building our sovereign digital future: fostering home-grown solutions, ensuring fair competition, and minimizing reliance. For businesses, compliance with the AI Act is the blueprint for earning trust and gaining a competitive edge, building trusted, human-centric AI.
